Blackstone Acquire Largest Apac Data Centre Platform Airtrunk Aud24 Bil
American investment management company Blackstone has recently announced its acquisition of data centre operator AirTrunk for A$24 billion ($21.05 billion). This deal marks Blackstone’s biggest investment in the Asia-Pacific region, surpassing its A$8.9 billion purchase of Australian casino operator Crown Resorts in 2022.
Together with the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board, Blackstone will be purchasing AirTrunk from Macquarie Asset Management and the Public Sector Pension Investment Board. The acquisition is still subject to approval from the Australian foreign investment review board.
AirTrunk currently operates in Australia, Japan, Malaysia, Hong Kong and Singapore, with a capacity of over 800 megawatts already committed to customers. The company also owns land that can potentially support an additional 1 gigawatt of growth in the region in the future.
According to Jon Gray, president and chief operating officer at Blackstone, the acquisition of AirTrunk is a strategic move towards making Blackstone a leading digital infrastructure investor across the world. He is confident that the company’s expertise and services in data centres, power, and related areas will be highly sought after.
Sean Klimczak, global head of Blackstone Infrastructure, and Nadeem Meghi, global co-head of Blackstone Real Estate, expressed their excitement over the acquisition, stating that prior to AirTrunk, Blackstone’s portfolio consisted of over US$55 billion in data centres under construction and a pipeline for development worth over US$70 billion.
Meanwhile, AirTrunk’s founder and CEO, Robin Khuda, is optimistic about the company’s future under Blackstone and CPP Investments. He believes that their capital, expertise, and network in the local markets will greatly benefit AirTrunk’s expansion plans.
